Southwest Airlines

Can Your Quarters, Cashless Cabins Coming to Southwest

In recent months we’ve witnessed the demise of the dollar bill and the wholesale killing of quarters as airlines eschew cash payment for in-flight food, drink and such and embrace plastic.

Now, it’s discount Southwest Airlines’ turn. Come September 9 you’d better be able to produce a credit or debit card if you want to order beer, wine, energy drinks or cocktails. Otherwise, you’ll have to settle for free soft dinks, water, coffee, tea or juice.

Unlike some airlines, Southwest doesn’t charge for those, just the alcohol and energy boosters.

Why the mounting switch to plastic? Hand-held card readers save the airlines time and money.
