Los Angeles International Airport Workers Back to Work

A strike by some 1,500 workers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on the brink of the Labor Day holiday was seemingly short-lived. Reuters reports Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles Mayor, intervened to bring about what amounts to a truce between the workers and companies that provide ground services for some of LAX's key carriers.

The service companies and the Service Employees International Local 1877 will resume talking, searching for a way to resolve disputes. At issue are pay and health insurance.

In a prepared statement, Mayor Villiaraigosa said he wants the parties - with the support of the airlines - “to come to a fair agreement that ensures quality services and keeps passengers moving safely and efficiently.”

An LAX spokesman tells Cheapflights that picketing late last week was peaceful and did not interfere with passengers who wanted access to the airport's terminals.
