Wheelchair Modifications for Atlanta Airport

Here’s a move that makes sense, one that other airports would do well to adopt. The planet’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), is retrofitting 135 wheelchairs with rear-luggage carriers. The upshot is that passengers using those wheelchairs won’t have to cradle their carry-on luggage in their laps any longer. They can place their bags in the rack on the back of the chair.

The airport is touting the chairs as another example of ATL’s “barrier-free” philosophy. The airport is already compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is the major hub for a couple of carriers: Delta Air Lines, and discount airline AirTran.
