New System Could Ease Congestion at JFK Airport

With on-time performance at New York Kennedy (JFK) trailing most other large airports around the country, this move just might help mitigate some of those delays. The Federal Aviation Administration (Web site: www.faa.gov) is getting a new system that will monitor and measure ground operations at Kennedy – taxiing aircraft for the most part. The idea is to gather information that Sensis (Web site: www.sensis.com), the system’s manufacturer, contends could help the FAA formulate “changes to airport operations that would ease congestion and flight delays.”

Called Aerobahn, the set-up is linked to FAA’s sophisticated ASDE-X radar. ASDE is an acronym for Airport Surface Detection Equipment. Sensis software will allow FAA Aerobahn users to see airport ground operations in real-time, even play back events out there on the taxiways and tarmac. The idea is to better probe just how effective air traffic control procedures are.

Tony Lo Brutto is Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems. He says, “The FAA will use the real-time situational awareness at the airport to identify new policies and procedures at the airport to improve taxi times, save fuel and reduce emissions at one of the nation's busiest airports."

New York Kennedy is home-base for discount airline JetBlue. Also fielding extensive international operations from the megaport are Delta Air Lines and American Airlines.
