Northwest Airlines to Launch Pair of Transpac Nonstops

Merger-bound Northwest Airlines is preparing to launch a couple of key new transpacific routes soon. Northwest, which is moving toward a probable merger with Delta Air Lines, intends to begin new nonstop China flights this coming March.

In the offing is service from Seattle/Tacoma (SEA) to Beijing (PEK). Nonstop flights are set to take wing on March 1, 2009. This would put Northwest in direct competition with Hainan Airlines (Web site: www.hnair.com), which already plies the long transpac route.

A few days later, on March 28, Northwest intends to begin nonstop service from its Detroit Metro (DTW) hub to Shanghai (PVG). According to Official Airline Guide (OAG) that would mark the only nonstop service from DTW to China’s premier business center.
