Triple Competition from Fort Lauderdale to San Juan Coming
In an era when airlines are axing routes right and left, it’s refreshing to see triple competition on a key leisure run. That’s what’s about to happen between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Discount airline JetBlue enters the market on December 18, going head-to-head with incumbents American Airlines and discount airline Spirit. To get you to pay attention to its new service, JetBlue is offering a one-ay discount airfare of $109, exclusive of taxes and fees.
To get this discount airfare, make a 21-day advance purchase and do it at the carrier’s Web site (www.jetblue.com). Otherwise the seat will cost $15 more. Best bet to land this rate is during the middle of the week, for travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
Initially, JetBlue will offer just one daily round trip between Fort Lauderdale and San Juan. But, as the busy winter tourist season builds, look for the discount airline to add a second daily round trip to the route starting January 6, 2009.
The carrier will field a full-size, 150-seat A320 twinjet on the overwater run.
