Bird Sanctuary Opened at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport
A 56.5-acre bird sanctuary has been opened by Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with the help of the Southern Conservation Trust (Web site: ).
Located 15 miles south of the airport, the sanctuary is situated in a dried lake bed.
Kathryn Masters, the airport's lead engineer, told the Associated Press that "the idea of man creating wetlands is a very new and modern idea".
Featuring a reconstructed stream and wooden bat houses, the sanctuary also has three observation decks, a half-mile walking trail and a gravel parking lot.
Birds include blue herons, hawks, egrets and turkeys, and there are also deer.
