Close-in Connections: Chicago Midway to Toronto City Centre
Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) and Toronto City Centre (YTZ) (Web site: www.torontoport.com) are two very convenient airports. Soon, they’ll be linked nonstop, at an introductory one-way discount airfare of $149.
Porter Airlines (Web site: www.flyporter.com) is the purveyor of this new service. Its new Q400 propjets are slated to begin plying the route on November 12. Porter is serious about this service. Its schedule calls for a half-dozen flights each weekday, as well as a couple of flights on Saturday and a trio on Sunday.
Convenience is what Porter is counting on to make the route work, the same way its Newark (EWR) to Toronto City Centre service has worked. City Centre Airport is a mere two miles from downtown Toronto, and Porter offers free shuttle busses from the airport to Toronto’s Union Station, steps from the city’s financial and entertainment districts.
Porter’s Canadian-built Bombardier Q400s may be propjets, but they aren’t that much slower than pure jets. They are also decidedly greener, using 30 to 40 percent less fuel than regional and full-size narrowbody jets.
The economy may be troubled just now, but Porter says it’s looking to add nonstop service to Boston; Washington, DC; and Philadelphia over the next 18 months as it takes delivery of more Q400s.
