Continental asks for year-round Houston to Rio rights

Another sign that despite the worldwide economic doldrums, there are great expectations for business down in Brazil. Continental Airlines just asked the Department of Transportation for year-round rights to offer nonstop service from its Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH) megahub to Rio de Janeiro (GIG). CO (that’s Continental’s airline code) wants to start the service in June 2009.

A bit of a bonus for Gulf Coast residents: as part of its application, Continental is asking DOT for permission to offer “through flight” service from New Orleans down to Rio as part of the package.

CO would deploy a Boeing 767-200 on the route, a craft fitted for 25 BusinessFirst and 149 economy seats.

Continental already offers one-stop service from Houston to Rio de Janeiro – this via Sao Paulo (GRU). To take advantage of peak tourist season, Continental will also operate a trio of weekly nonstops from Houston to Rio from December 17, 2008 through February 28, 2009.
