Copa Airlines announces carbon offsetting program

Copa Airlines, an affiliate of Continental Airlines which offers flights within Panama, has added a "carbon calculator" to its website. Passengers traveling with the airline will be able to offset the environmental impact at the time of booking a flight.

The program is available at www.copaair.com and allows passengers to work out the level of carbon emissions produced by their travel.

Customers then have the option of taking part in the carrier's voluntary carbon offsetting program by making a monetary contribution.

Pedro Heilbron, Chief Executive of Copa Airlines, said: "We are very pleased to offer this dependable and respected option for offsetting the carbon footprint of air travel and to participate in this joint effort to benefit our planet.

"Counteracting the effects of climate change is an enormous challenge, which will be successful only if we undertake the task together."

The new carbon offsetting plan is part of a series of environmental initiatives from Copa, which also includes investments in fuel-efficient engines and an Environmental Adaption and Management Program.
