Fewer Delays With Sea-Tac Airport’s Third Runway?
Seattle/Tacoma’s (SEA) signature climate may make people more introspective, but it can also render them late to the gate. Consider: 44 percent of the year Sea-Tac is plagued by low visibility. That can be a problem if you handle the kind of traffic it does, and only have a pair of runways, spaced so closely together that they can’t handle simultaneous landings in poor weather.
That’s about to change. The Port of Seattle says a new 8,500-foot third runway is scheduled to go into service on November 20, just in time for the anticipated Thanksgiving crush. That runway will open up the airport to simultaneous landings, and that should have a significant impact of Sea-Tac’s on-time arrival performance.
The news will be especially welcome by Alaska Airlines’ flyers. SEA is home base for the airline.
