Say So Long to Service at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport
In its short existence, MidAmerica St. Louis Airport (BLV) (Web site: www.flymidamerica.com) has developed a reputation as the whitest of elephants. Now, it’s about to turn a whiter shade of pale.
According to the Belleville News Democrat, discount airline Allegiant Air will sever its final ties with the field on January 3, 2009, when it axes twice-weekly nonstop service from MidAmerica to Las Vegas. The carrier dropped its nonstops down to Orlando Sanford International Airport (Web site: www.orlandosanfordairport.com) in September.
Soon the airport will find itself bereft yet again of commercial air service. According to the newspaper, discount airline Allegiant’s departure will mark the fourth carrier to have pulled up stakes at MidAmerica since the facility opened.
The airport was initially envisioned as a reliever field for Lambert St. Louis International, which, once upon a time, was the late Trans World Airlines’ major hub.
