Officials Reject Sound of Music Hotel in Salzburg

So long, farewall... to plans to open a new Sound of Music-themed hotel.

Salzburg's officials have refused plans turn the home of the Von Trapp family into an homage to the classic movie, "The Sound of Music."

Immortalized in the film, Baron Von Trapp, his seven children and their nanny-turned stepmother Maria, a novice nun, lived at the villa from 1923 to 1938. Plans to open the villa to travelers were announced earlier this year. However, neighbors have complained that tourists flocking to the famous home would create noise and traffic pollution in the area, prompting city officials to block plans to covert it into a hotel.

In a statement to AFP news agency, owners Marianne Dorfer and Christopher Unterkofler said: "It seems like the Villa Trapp, the original Sound of Music family home, is not getting a permission to open as a hotel, although all legal conditions have been complied with."

They added that they would appeal against the decision.

Travelers wanting a piece of the movie's montage can book flights to Salzburg and climb the hills that made Austria come alive in the 1965 movie.
