AirTran U Opens Enrollment – Students Save Big on Standby Flights
It’s tough being a college student. From books and tuition to rent and meals, the costs add up quickly. So, when someone offers a college student a deal it's worth taking. Enter: AirTran.
Discount airline AirTran is opening up registration for a third straight year in its ‘AirTran U’ program, a deal that allows students 18 to 22 to fly standby to any of the carrier’s 58 cities – except San Juan (SJU) and Cancun flights (CUN).
The price? For a mere $69 for a one-way short-haul flight, or $99 for a one-way long-haul flight, students can fly standby. Taxes and fees aren’t included.
Here’s how it works. Choose the destination, dates, and times you want to fly. Then, show up at the AirTran counter at least two hours before scheduled departure with your student I.D. If a seat is available after the final boarding call, you get it.
A few tips to keep in mind before committing to your AirTran flight:
-You'll have to pay the standby fee for all 'segments'. Each segment is one leg of the trip, so non-stop flights will save you the most money.
-You can’t check luggage with AirTran U so pack light. You’re allowed one carry-on, and one personal item when boarding the plane.
-The best time to grab these deals are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
