Destination Spotlight: The Magic of Mexico - Puerto Escondido

There’s more to Mexico than Cancun and Cabo. Mexico Travel Tips: All the ATMs are in the town center, so if you stay at one of the remote Mexico beach destinations in Oaxaca, make sure you have enough pesos as many places only accept cash.

Hotels: Many Mexico accommodations in Puerto Escondido come with a breathtaking view. The secluded boutique hotel Villas Carrizalillo is situated on a cliff that overlooks the scenic and tranquil Playa Carrizalillo and starts at $120 per night. Or, you can pay less to stay on the main street of Zicatela Beach at the Hotel Arco Iris and opt for either cliff top views or beach level rooms.  

Flights: Mexico flights from Los Angeles start at $324, but you might have to connect once you’re in Mexico. It’s best to book a direct flight to Mexico City (MEX) and search for a domestic carrier to take you to Puerto. Mexicana offers round-trip Mexico City flights from $150.

I went in March this year (2009) to Puerto Escondido and it is the most awesome place I have ever been to! It is very relaxing and laid back. I didn't want to leave! I almost became one of the hippies that have stayed there. And not to mention all the surfers that come all the way from Australia and New Zealand! It's really an amazing beach town. There's also the Best Western Posada Real hotel, where I stayed, which can suit Americans who are selective on where they stay. And for vegetarians, there's a restaurant in Hotel Santa Fe - it's owned by an American man. I really can't wait to go back and visit Puerto Escondido.

I spend much of the year in Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido is a favorite "escape" for me. It's the BEST. There are budget hotels, as well as the super ones mentioned above. Great fishing. November is packed with fishing tournament, surfing competition and folk dance entertainment that you won't believe! In January there's a Blues/Jazz Festival.
