New Mexico International Airport Prepares for New Runway
News out of New Mexico is that the Las Cruces International Airport has about to break ground on a new runway.
The existing runway, built during World War II, will be replaced by a state-of-the-art concrete strip, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. For those travelers on New Mexico flights, the construction of Runway 12-30 begins Monday.
According to the paper, construction will take approximately nine months and will cost $11.37 million. The New Mexico airport received the money from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding and help from the FAA.
Tom Baca, aviation division director of the New Mexico Department of Transportation, said New Mexico will receive about "$278 million for transportation projects, including nearly $16 million for three aviation projects throughout the state. This money will help improve all facets of transportation in New Mexico."
"Build a mile of runway to travel the world and the world comes to you," said Baca.
