American Airlines Flight Attendants Hold Mock Strikes

American Airlines flight attendants will stage mock strikes throughout the American Airlines network this month, thanks to unresolved labor disputes.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants Union, which represents the 18,000 American Airlines flight attendants, said that on Nov. 18, protests will be held at airports around the country emphasizing how flights will be disrupted if a real strike should occur. The union is organizing 'mock strikes' while it continues to seek permission for real strikes beginning next year.

In an effort to try and quell the controversy, bargaining sessions between the union and American Airlines will stand in session through January.

On the table for discussion: wage and benefit increases.

American Airlines is no stranger to strikes. The airline endured two strikes in the 1990's - one by the flight attendants in 1993 and one by pilots in 1997. Both strikes ended when then President Clinton ordered the employees back to work and the airline to re-enter negotiations.
