Fare Wars: Delta Matches AirTran $39 Flights

Today's fare war comes courtesy of Delta Air Lines, who called 'match' in response to AirTran's $39 one-way flight sale. Delta joined AirTran in offering sale fares for flights through November.

Discount Airfare: Cheap Flights on AirTran Through November

AirTran is offering cheap flights to dozens of cities in the U.S., including Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. The fares are good for travel through Nov. 4, but you must book by June 30.

The flights are cheap, but beware of a few restrictions:

  • Travel on Tuesday and Wednesday for lowest fares
  • Fares are not valid on Sundays
  • Blackout dates are June 26, 27, 28 and July 2,5 and 6

AirTran Launches New Service, Routes

AirTran pilots have had a busy week. Aside from the usual routes from the carrier's hub in Atlanta, AirTran launched several new routes, including seasonal non-stop flights to Portland, Maine and Harrisburg, Pa.

The new Harrisburg flights will continue through Sept. 8 and the Portland flights go through Nov. 3.

AirTran Starts Trading on Global Points Exchange

AirTran Airways A+ rewards program members now have more options for using reward points.

Points International Ltd., owner and operator of www.points.com, recently welcomed A+ Rewards to the  Global Points Exchange (GPX) network.

What's this mean for AirTran consumers?

It means you can take the points you've earned from flying AirTran and credit them to another GPX program member including, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, American Airlines AAdvantage®, Frontier Airlines EarlyReturns®, Iceland Air Award Points, Delta Air Lines SkyMiles®, Midwest Airlines’ Midwest Miles, and InterContinental’s Priority Club® Rewards.

AirTran to Offer WiFi on all Flights

It was only a matter of time before airlines upgraded to the Internet era.

AirTran Airways announced that beginning this summer, all AirTran nationwide flights will offer wireless Internet access. The price tag for the in-flight WiFi service starts at $7.95 for wireless access with a smart phone or PDA and $12.95 for laptop service on a flight lasting more than 3 hours.

In a written release, AirTran CEO Bob Fornaro said the airline plans to have all 136 of its Boeing 737 and 717 jets ready for in-flight wireless by late July 2009. Once the airplane hits 10,000 feet, passengers can re-connect.

Airlines Map Out Cuba Flight Plans

Now that travel restrictions to Cuba have eased up, some airlines are starting to put travel plans together for potential U.S. flights to Cuba.

Allegiant and AirTran are the first airlines talking openly about potential Cuba flights. Both low-cost carriers currently offer flights to the Caribbean.

According to Travel Weekly, Allegiant recently entered into contract talks with other airlines to provide Miami flights to Cuba, and hopes to start flying to Cuba as early as June.
