Continental hikes checked bag fees and allows for faster and more convenient online check-in

January 13, 2010

Continental AirlinesContinental made two swift moves recently; one to please passengers, and one that might not. The airline has offered a new online check-in service that makes the airport process faster and easier. It has also raised checked baggage fees like its competitor, Delta.

Let’s start with the good news. Now you can check in online, print your boarding pass (or have it faxed to you if you don’t have a printer) and bypass lines at the airport. Just drop off your bags at either a Continental counter, or at an eService kiosk, and head through security. Just make sure to do it 30 minutes before a domestic scheduled departure time, and 60 minutes before an international scheduled departure time.

You can also get your boarding pass electronically by using your mobile phone or PDA. Simply display the barcode at the security checkpoint, according to Continental’s site.

Eligible travelers for online check-in include people departing from a US airport or a qualified international airport, if your first flight of your itinerary is operated by Continental, if your itinerary has less than four flights total, and if you’re traveling with less than 10 people.

Online check-in isn’t available for people who need special service requiring Continental representatives, people using paper ticket reservations, or any travel to Australia.

Now for the fee hikes: In the wake of Delta’s recent price increase, Continental has followed suit by adding $8 to the first checked bag ($25 total), and $7 to the second ($35 total). These prices include checking in at the airport, but you can pay slightly lower fees if you check in online, according to USA Today.

MY FAMILY JUST RECENTLY FLEW WITH AIR TRAN. THEY HAVE THIS STUPID CHECKED BAG FEE ALSO. WE PACKED ALL OUR STUFF UP, AND SENT IT FEDEX. GUESS WHAT…..IT WAS A LOT CHEAPER AND IT WAS THERE WHEN WE ARRIVED. ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS TAKE OUR CARRY ON BAG. THIS ALSO HELPED MAKE IT THROUGH THE AIRPORT A WHOLE LOT FASTER. COMING HOME, WE BOXED IT BACK UP AND SENT OUR STUFF HOME. KUDOS TO FEDEX FOR MAKING THIS SO EASY AND CHEAPER. EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEND THERE STUFF GROUND, THEN THESE GREEDY AIRLINES WILL STOP CHARGING SO MUCH, OR LEARN NOT TO LOSE YOUR LUGGAGE.
