Fare Wars: Delta Matches AirTran $39 Flights

We love a good airline match-up at Cheapflights. For travel experts, a good airfare war is like the Super Bowl of travel -- we don't know who is going to win, but it's going to be a lot of fun to watch it play out.

Today's fare war comes courtesy of Delta Air Lines, who called 'match' in response to AirTran's $39 one-way flight sale. Delta joined AirTran in offering sale fares for flights through November.

Discount Airfare: Delta's Cheap Flights to Mexico, Latin America

Delta's Discount Airfare Sale to Australia: Flights Start June 30

Delta Vacations, Westin Aruba Offers One Night Free

Aruba may already be “One Happy Island,” but you’ll be one happy traveler when you get a night free at the Westin Aruba.

The details: Book an air/hotel package with Delta Vacations for six nights or more and the sixth night is free. Booking and travel is valid through Dec. 18.

Delta Drops Non-stop Routes, 'Reassess Staffing Needs'

Reports say Delta Air Lines will trim flights and staff as a result of rising fuel costs and revenue loss.

According to USA Today, Delta "will trim more capacity than first expected as rising fuel costs and the continued economic downturn hit the world’s largest carrier. The cuts will take place later this year."

The paper reports that Delta will cut several routes:

• Cincinnati will lose international non-stop flights to Frankfurt and London
• Altanta will lose its non-stop flights to Seoul and Shanghai.
• New York JFK will lose its non-stop flights to Edinburgh, Scotland
• Reduce weekly flights connecting Atlanta and Detroit to Mexico City

Delta Defers Kenya-USA Flights

Delta Airlines has postponed its U.S. flights to Kenya, pending further approval from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Delta said the Transportation Security Administration will require more time to approve the the planned direct flights to Nairobi, Kenya and Monrovia, Liberia.

Last month, Delta announced that it would begin direct flights to Nairobi from Atlanta through Dakar. The Kenya flights were scheduled to begin on June 3.

Discount Airfare: Delta's Weekend Travel Deals

Couldn’t find a cheap flight for Memorial Day weekend? Get out of town this weekend instead.

Delta Air Lines is offering discounted fares when you book and travel by Sat., May 30.

The fares are based on a round-trip purchase and return flights are available on Mon. June 1 or Tues., June 2. Take note that while other airlines are also offering weekend fares, some require you to book a day earlier.

Discount Airfare: Delta's Cheap Flights from Atlanta

Delta Air Lines is offering cheap flights from Atlanta to European and South American destinations. Travel dates for Europe are valid from May 27 through Aug. 20. Travel to South America is good between now and July 15.

Fortaleza, Brazil from $319

Delta Cancels Boston-Baltimore Flights

Now that low-cost carriers have entered the Boston market, some legacy airlines are conceding to their competition. The first to bow out, Delta Airlines announced it will stop flying the Boston to Baltimore route.

Southwest Airlines arrives in Boston this August and will offer non-stop flights to Chicago and Baltimore. JetBlue jumped on the East Coast flight pattern and offered competing fares for Boston to Baltimore flights. AirTran has been flying Boston-Baltimore and shows no signs of stopping.
