Frontier Emerges from Bankruptcy

Today’s a big day for Frontier Airlines – it’s coming out of bankruptcy.

After struggling for some time with financial strain, the airline has been purchased by Indianapolis-based Republic Airlines. Now, reemerging into the market, Frontier may undergo some changes.

The biggest change that may occur is a shift in headquarters. Right now, Frontier is based in Denver, which boasts high taxes on most maintenance expenses. One of the largest costs the airline deals with is a special tax on ticketing, which adds up to $1.5 million annually. Making the move would cut that expense completely.

Frontier Airlines' Cheap Flights to Fort Myers from $99

Frontier Airlines is warming things up this winter with new flights to and from Fort Myers. Fares start at $99 each way and must be booked by Oct. 21 for travel through March 10. There’s also an added bonus to this sale.

Early Returns members who fly between Denver and Fort Myers from Nov. 21 through Dec. 21 will receive double miles for future travel.

The discounted fares are good for travel on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We had a bit of difficulty finding availability in November, but were able to find seats in January. Also, take note of black-out dates, which occur around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day.

Frontier Airlines Four-Day Sale: Flights Through March 2010

Frontier Airlines got the memo and launched a four-day fall flight sale on travel through March 2010. Purchase Frontier flights for as low as $44 (excluding taxes and fees) each way by Sept. 25, 2009, and travel by March 10, 2010.

Frontier Airlines Flight Sale: $44 Fares Through March 2010

There are two kinds of travelers: Those who book last-minute flights and those who plan months in advance. If you’re a planner, this Frontier Airlines system-wide sale is for you.

The airline is offering discounted fares on all its routes when you travel through March 10, 2010. To get the lowest fare for each route, travel Monday through Thursday or Saturday. Flights must be booked by Sept. 15. Take note of the black-out dates around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day.

When we searched for a mid-week flight between Albuquerque and Denver, we found a round-trip flight totaling $98, with taxes included. 

Frontier Airlines Lowers Fees for Changed Flights

This is one of those good-news/bad-news scenarios. The bad news is that Frontier Airlines will increase its checked bag fee from $15 to $20 for the first checked bag, and from $25 to $30 for the second checked bag. The good news is that Frontier is lowering is change fee for flights by $50.

Customers who purchase an Economy class ticket on Frontier Airlines can now change their flights for a $100 change fee, down from $150. Want to travel the same day but at a different time? No problem - for $100 you can get a confirmed seat with Frontier for same-day flights.

Te new baggage fees go into effect for airline tickets purchased on or after Sept. 8, 2009, for travel starting Oct. 1, 2009.

Frontier 'Hop Around America' Sale – Flights from $44

Frontier Airlines is encouraging you to “Hop Around America” with their latest sale. Fares start at $44 each way to cities like Denver, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.

Unlike many other fare sales we’ve seen lately with short-term travel dates, this one allows you to fly through Feb. 10, 2010. Note: To get the cheapest flight, travel Monday through Thursday or Saturday.

Book by Aug. 24 and a 10-day advance purchase is required.

We tested Albuquerque to Denver in September and found fares from approximately $53 each way (with taxes). Total: $107. When we searched other airlines, United had a $115 round-trip.

Airline News: Republic, Not Southwest, Wins Bid for Frontier

Denver news station 9News reports that Republic Airways Holdings won the bid for Frontier Airlines, beating out rival Southwest Airlines in an auction.

Frontier Airlines went up for auction on Thursday as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. Earlier this week, Southwest bid more than $170 million for Frontier. However, according to Frontier, Republic's bid of $108 million won the airline because "Republic also agreed to waive distributions on its $150 million prepetition unsecured claim, which is expected to result in a 94 percent increase in the distribution to Frontier's general unsecured creditors."

"Republic submitted the highest and best bid," according to a release from Frontier. "This plan provides for Frontier and Lynx to maintain normal operations as a subsidiary of Republic."

In a statement on Southwest's Web site, the airline said it lost the bid because it was not willing to remove the need for the two Pilot Unions to reach agreement.

Airline News: Southwest Makes Bid for Frontier Airlines

Southwest Airlines Co. announced it will bid $113.6 million to purchase Frontier Airlines. According to Business Week, Southwest's bid is part of a U.S. Bankruptcy Court proceeding which says airlines can submit "nonbinding bid proposals to acquire the troubled carrier."

The bidding deadline for the airline is Aug. 10, at which point Frontier Airlines will be sold at auction.

In a statement from Southwest, the airline said the acquisition of Frontier into the Southwest network would expand the company’s route list and possibly add jobs in Frontier's core areas, including Denver.

Airline News: Frontier Airlines Wins An Emmy

Move over Tina Fey, Frontier Airlines is on your tail and it's making run for the Emmys.

A Frontier Airlines commercial that explains why Frontier's airplanes' tales don't have cows on them has won a regional Emmy. Yes, cows. It actually sounds like something out of "30 Rock" but we checked, and it's not -- this Emmy-winning airline scripted a television ad that made the Academy sit up and take notice. 

Frontier accepted the Heartland Regional Emmy award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on July 18, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Frontier Airlines: Last-minute Denver Flights from $49

Summer is the time to be spontaneous, so go ahead, book that last-minute flight. Frontier Airlines is making it easy with their July Travel Bargains.

The fares are good for flights to and from Denver, but travel must be completed by July 29. Also, a three-day advance purchase is required.

Fares are broken into three tiers: Economy, Classic and Classic Plus. The latter two offer more perks, including complimentary DIRECTV and two free checked bags.
