Expansive Hawaiian Airlines to add two more Airbuses

Here's a vote of confidence in the future. Hawaiian Airlines plans to add two more A330-200 widebodies - a move that would accelerate introduction of the transoceanic twinjets into the Hawaiian fleet to 2011.

The 298-seat A330-200s, leased from AWAS, will be fitted for two classes: first and economy. They have very long legs, and are capable of flying 5,500 nautical miles nonstop.

The two leased A330-200s come on top of an agreement concluded back in February with Airbus which would see six A330s don Hawaiian livery. The craft will be able to connect Hawaii nonstop with all of North America, as well as eastern Asia.

In wake of Aloha demise Hawaiian adds interisland airplanes

Ever since Aloha Airlines went under earlier this year, there's been a bit of a seat crunch on Hawaii's interisland flights. Gone are Aloha's comparatively commodious 737s, and smaller commuter craft flown by other airlines can't match their capacity. That's forced Hawaiian Airlines to put one of its long-range, overwater 767-300s to work ferrying flyers back and forth from Honolulu (HNL) to Maui (OGG). Bolstering the big Boeing, Hawaiian is using a smaller reserve Boeing 717 to meet demand - a spare aircraft that's usually held in reserve to cover scheduled flying in the event of a delay.

The solution to the dilemma is more interisland airplanes. And Hawaiian has responded by significantly expanding its interisland fleet, adding a quartet of 717s to the fleet. Two are due to come on line in September; the remainder in November and December respectively. This will give Hawaiian 15 of the twinjets, which are essentially upgraded, more modern derivatives of the classic McDonnell Douglas DC-9.
