4 Airlines Extend, Raise Surcharges for Peak Travel Times

At first it was just an extra $10 or $20 added to your Thanksgiving flight, but the airlines have raked in so much additional revenue from the surcharges they're extending -- and increasing -- the surcharges through peak travel times in 2010.

United, Delta, and Northwest are increasing their peak travel time flights by $50 in some cases through Memorial Day 2010. US Airways took another approach and is adding a surcharge equal to 5% of the fare price on all domestic flights starting May 8.

The $50 surcharge applies to flights on Feb. 8, the day after the Super Bowl. The other surcharges range between $10 and $30 and coincide with peak travel times in the Spring, which will affect Spring Break travelers.

US Airways Offers Cheap Flights to Telluride

Mountain
It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter. Yesterday we told you about a deal where kids can fly free to Vail on American Airlines. Today, we’ve found a wintery deal from US Airways: Discounted fares to Telluride.

Fresh snow has already fallen in Colorado this year, so book a flight for this winter and hit the slopes. This Colorado ski spot is famous for its winter sports, along with its great mountain views. If downhill skiing isn’t your thing, you can cross-country ski in Mountain Village, which is 12 minutes away by gondola.

When booking a flight, check the terms and conditions. Select departure cities require an advance purchase and certain travel dates.  We searched for a fare from Austin in January and found a round-trip flight for lower than advertised. With taxes included, the flight totals $282.

US Airways Announces New Approach to Frequent Flier Miles

Us-airways-eagle If you have miles on US Airways that are set to expire, pay close attention to this report: Effective Jan. 6, 2010, US Airways is reformatting its requirements for free flights based on frequent-flier miles.

The good news: It'll cost you fewer miles to travel off-peak times.

The bad news: You'll have to hand over more miles for high-demand flights, including holiday travel and peak travel season, such as Europe in the summer or the Caribbean in the winter.

Currently, passengers must cash in either 25,000 or 50,000 miles for a round-trip coach flight in the United States or Canada. The flight options vary based on the time of year, destination and available seats. Under the new plan, customers will have to trade in as many as 60,000 miles for flights during peak seasons to peak destinations. The new program will offer trade-ins based on different levels including off-peak, low, medium, and high demand flights.

US Airways Announces Cuts in Jobs and Flights

As of yesterday, US Airways has decided to cut approximately 1,000 jobs and scale back both domestic and international flights in order to preserve profitability in 2010.

The first goal is to direct 99% of its flights to the carrier’s hubs, since those locations are where it makes the most money. Airports in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Charlotte, and Washington, D.C., make the most money, and as of right now, only 93% of US Airways flights include them.
