Southwest takes off ... at McCarran

Bags bedevil us when we fly. It’s one of those immutable laws of natures. They get packed, screened, and banged about. Now something to render the process a bit more civilized.

If you’re flying out of Las Vegas McCarran International you can make it through the airport virtually hands-fee. Check your luggage at one of a half-dozen Airport SpeedCheck Advance locations around town and give yourself one less thing to worry about. Bags To Go agents take your luggage, give you a boarding pass, and then send those bags to TSA out at McCarran for screening. There is a fee involved. But it probably pales in comparison to the money you lost in the casino.

Take advantage of this remote check-in at:

  • The Las Vegas Convention Center
  • The McCarran Rent-A-Car Center
  • Luxor Hotel and Casino
  • MGM Grand
  • The Palazzo Hotel
  • The Venetian Hotel

Lots of maintenance work going on at Nashville International. The airport is updating the terminal exterior with new escalators, skylight glass, and entrance doors. To avoid the hassle BNA suggests you use the elevators located on the ground transportation and ticket counter levels, that or the stairs.

Work should be finished by August 2012.

Finally, from Charlotte Douglas International, there’s this: Construction’s under way on a new Hourly Parking Deck at CLT, US Airways’ growing southern hub. When work’s finished there will be seven levels and 7,000 spaces. Charlotte is completing this much-needed project in a couple of phases, the first of which should be up and running in June 2013.

More immediately, you can now pay for parking at Charlotte using Pay&Go machines. That means you can settle the bill before heading to your car. Saves time and hassle on the way out of the lot.

It’s the little stuff that makes airports work right – or wrong. Tell us about your most recent revelation.
