Mexico was at the top of my list – I’d never been and it was cheap enough to justify an 11-day vacation financially.

After a depressing, watered-down stay at a Dominican Republic all-inclusive last Thanksgiving (excuse: my cousin got married), I was eager to plan a no-frills, culture-heavy trip early this year. Mexico was at the top of my list – I’d never been and it was cheap enough to justify an 11-day vacation financially. After some soft planning, my boyfriend and I boarded a short flight – seemingly, thanks to JetBlue’s never-ending TV options – and picked up our reserved rental car at Cancun’s airport.

Tip No.1: Fill said rental car with gas if you get the vehicle with a nearly empty tank. Assured by a Europcar staffer that a gas station was a few miles down Route 180, we were off. Thirty minutes – and an explanation from a farmer on the side of the road that no, we would not find gas for another two hours – later, we turned around.

Valladolid ... home to lots of VW Bugs

After our delayed start, we made it to Valladolid, an enchanting town two hours (if you start with a full tank) inland from Cancun. We wandered for two days around the one-storied city, practicing our Spanish and sampling street food. On day two we motored just outside of the city to Valladolid’s famous cenotes – basically underground sinkholes – to take a dip. They were at one point sacred grounds for Mayans; now they exist more as relief from the Yucatan’s high temps for tourists and locals alike.

An inspiration swim ... at Cenote Sambula

We then drove to Merida (and stopped en route at Chichen Itza; I highly recommend getting there early, before the crowds and in-your-face merchants arrive) and had our first glimpse of Mexican urban life. The weekend market was in full swing when we arrived Saturday afternoon and hammocks, the area’s specialty, were on sale in bulk. I bargained at a few stalls, then realized indoor hammocks in the Northeast are only appropriate – well, never.

Chichen Itza ... before the crowds

Like many cities, Merida was mostly about the food for us. A regular at Chi Chi’s for the first 13 years of my life, I realize I may not be a connoisseur of Mexican food. But I can say with certainty that Yucatan’s specialties – panuchos, papadzules, cochinita pibil, ceviche – put Chi Chi’s seafood enchiladas to shame. Maybe my favorite taste of the visit was a michelada (and no, imitations at SXSW do not count) at El Trapiche. The libation’s flavor profile – spicy, salty, refreshing – was fantastic.

Micheladas for all! ... in Merida

We woke early after a couple of days in Merida to make the long haul to Chetumal. A six-or-so-hour drive, it offered beautiful views of farms and unsullied landscapes, making the lack of air conditioning in our 90s-era rental somewhat bearable. Chetumal lacks real character – it has a Sam’s Club and other Wal-Mart-owned companies, to give you an idea – but it’s a typical border town and convenient for expats looking to stock up. We only spent enough time there to return our car, find the bus station and down a quick quesadilla before crossing the border into Belize.

After a couple days in Belize City and Caye Caulker, an island off Belize’s coast that boasts world-renowned snorkeling and a laid-back vibe, we returned to Mexico and headed straight for Tulum, our final destination of the trip.

Sunrise in Tulum ... unreal

The eco-friendly beach retreat provided exactly the undiluted escape we needed. Sometimes bopping from one town to the next gets exhausting – especially when your time at each town is spent on foot for hours each day. We spent our last four days indulging: beachfront dinners – think lobster rubbed with roasted garlic, melt-in-your-mouth ceviche and pollo con mole – bike rides to Tulum’s coastal ruins, and uninterrupted hours catching up on must-reads that had queued in our Kindles.

Our hut ... at Coco Tulum

On our way home, we spent a night in Cancun – our flight left early the next morning – and contemplated exploring the party town on foot. Instead we ordered a pizza from our comparatively plush hotel room and watched Law & Order, exhausted at the notion of body shots and undergrads after a week-plus of authentic Mexico.

In honor of the official start of spring, we’ve picked 10 top places around the world to see a magnificent sunrise.

Residents of the Northern Hemisphere are downright giddy this time of year, waiting on the edge of their frostbitten seats for spring to finally arrive. Luckily there’s not much longer to wait: Tuesday, March 20 is the Spring Equinox this year, when the sun rises exactly in the east and remains in the sky for 12 hours, setting directly in the west. Though the science of it is profoundly interesting, most of us are more concerned about the increase in sunlight—and warmth—on the not-so-distant horizon.

Speaking of horizons: In honor of the official start of spring, we’ve picked 10 top places around the world to see a magnificent sunrise.

An early wake-up .... for Haleakala National Park

Hawaii, USA

Boarding a bus in the wee hours of morning is a pain, particularly on vacation when the greatest indulgence is sleeping in. But the alarm-clock acknowledgement is worth it if the payoff is watching a sunrise from above the clouds, on the top of a volcano. Various van tours offer the trip through Haleakala National Park in Maui, picking visitors up at 3 a.m. and dropping them off to see the event from the summit. Should you want to (and we highly recommend it), you can bike the 28 miles down the mountain, back to sea level. Search and compare cheap flights to Hawaii.

Svalbard's sunrise ... a magical appeal

Svalbard, Norway

The sun doesn’t set in Svalbard—at least not between mid-April and late August each year. It’s obvious, then, why the sun rising holds an almost magical appeal for visitors. Situated north of the Arctic Circle, the northernmost inhabited spot on the planet features the midnight sun, a phenomenon where the sun stays continuously in the sky for 24 hours a day. Glaciers and mountains clutter Svalbard’s horizon, painting a landscape that merely enhances the event. Search and compare cheap flights to Norway.

A religious experience ... over Angkor Wat

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Angkor Wat any time of day is powerful, but arriving early enough to watch the sunrise offers visitors an even greater spectacle. The preserved temple attracts travelers to Cambodia from around the world, providing them architectural insight into Khmer and Hindu mythology and history. We advise that visitors dedicate more than a day to exploring the sacred grounds (and that one of those days begins before dawn). Search and compare cheap flights to Cambodia.

<img class=" wp-image-32745" title="The first in the world ...
Fiji

Smack dab on the 180-degree longitude line, Fiji is one of the first spots in the world to see the sun rise every day. The South Pacific destination, a favorite among lovers of turquoise seas and white-sand beaches (and who isn’t), offers unrivaled scenery and inspirational landscapes. Itinerary tip: Follow an intoxicating sunrise up with a morning exploration; the “soft coral capital of the world” offers some of the best scuba diving in the world. Search and compare cheap flights to Fiji.

Worth the climb ... on Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is on practically every adventure traveler’s to-do list. With the enormous undertaking comes a chance to see one of the most enchanting sunrises in the world. From Kili’s summit—19,341 feet above sea level—dedicated souls can reflect on their ascent, a massive accomplishment, while soaking up an unparalleled sight to see. Search and compare cheap flights to Tanzania.

Spiritual sunrises ... at Stonehenge

Stonehenge, England

Equinox devotees will gather at 5:14 a.m. on the dot this year for the Vernal Equinox. A place of sun worship still, Stonehenge is a mysterious destination that holds deep spiritual value for many travelers. Some researchers suggest the formation was erected as early as 2200 BC, while others argue it was even earlier, in 3000 BC. No matter the date of creation, Stonehenge is a powerful landmark, and well worth the visit for a beautiful—and perhaps magical—sunrise. Search and compare cheap flights to England.

Tres Cruces, Peru

A six-hour bus ride from Cuzco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, Tres Cruces is undeniably worth the long trek. The Incas held the mountain spot, situated on the Amazon basin, sacred. Nowadays, it’s visitors looking to experience a mind-blowing sunrise who sanctify the destination. The view famously boasts celestial hues and Polaroid moments from above the clouds. Search and compare cheap flights to Peru.

A natural alarm ... in Tulum

Tulum, Mexico

The coastal oasis of Tulum draws spiritual travelers and yoga-types year-round to soak up exquisite culture, history and scenery all in a single spot. The destination’s think-green mentality and efforts toward sustainability set the tone for a raw form of vacationing, where visitors are up with the sun (and often in bed shortly after the sun goes down). No need to set an alarm in Tulum, where sun worshipers gather at the shoreline daily to watch the sunrise. Search and compare cheap flights to Mexico.

Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA

The most impressive sunrises in the continental United States occur every day across the Grand Canyon. Cool purples melt into shades bronze and orange against the awe-inspiring scenery, arguably America’s greatest natural wonder. There isn’t a best place to see the sunrise in the Grand Canyon, but Maricopa, Hopi, and Mather points, and along the South Rim are recommended highly by in-the-know travelers. Search and compare cheap flights to the Grand Canyon.

Mount Sinai, Egypt

First a history refresher: Jews, Christians and Muslims alike believe that Moses received the 10 Commandments at the biblical Mount Sinai, as mentioned in the Torah, Bible and Quran. Still an important religious destination, Mount Sinai today draws believers who scale the route by foot for religious purposes, and for the chance to see one of the most inspiring sunrises in the world. Search and compare cheap flights to Egypt.

In honor of International Women’s Day (March 8), the team at Cheapflights is offering a very grateful thanks to women globetrotters and adventurers who’ve paved the way for us all. The global day of recognition, a national holiday in many countries like China and Russia, celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women. Appropriately enough, we’re taking this opportunity to celebrate 10 of the top trailblazing women travelers.

Harriet Martineau (1802-1876)

Harriet Martineau was wildly disappointed by America when she made a visit during a two-year trip around the States. Considered the first female sociologist, Martineau controversially spoke out against slavery when the topic was still a major point of contention in American society. Also a feminist, she was unimpressed by the treatment of women in the free nation, drawing parallels between America’s women and its slaves. After returning home, Martineau published Society in America, a caustic review of the country, and inspired generations of feminists, sociologists and – of course – travelers.

Mary Kingsley (1862-1900)

Mary Kingsley returned to England after years traveling through Western Africa, where she acquainted herself with indigenous groups and local customs in countries like Sierra Leone and Angola. Unheard of for a Victorian woman, Kingsley traveled through dangerous areas solo, including treacherous African jungles. A critic of European colonialism and missionaries trying to change African customs, Kingsley forever influenced European thoughts about Africa and indigenous groups.

Fanny Bullock Workman (1859-1925)

Fanny Bullock Workman scaled the Himalayas with her husband, William Workman, as a brave mountaineer and record-breaking female in the late 1800s. London’s Royal Geographical Society awarded Workman membership after her seventh trip into the Himalayas. Together, she and her husband reached the top of Pinnacle Peak (23,263 feet), shattering other climbers’ records at the time. An advocate for women’s rights, she supported women’s colleges like Bryn Mawr and Radcliffe and raised the bar for adventure travelers everywhere.

Gertrude Bell (1868-1926)

Gertrude Bell broke barriers early in life as the first woman to graduate from Oxford with a history degree. In a time when most women married young and none were allowed to vote, Bell set off for Persia fresh out of school, traveling through the Arabian Desert by herself and living with tribes for years. In more than 1,000 letters home, Bell described her enchantment with Persia and the Orient. She worked as a spy in Cairo during World War I, and then as a diplomat, helping to form a unified Iraq under the leadership of King Faisal. When “The Uncrowned Queen of Iraq” died at 57, the masses turned out in Baghdad to celebrate her life.

Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

The first woman ever to fly solo across the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart is an icon for little girls and lovers of flight around the world. When she first saw an airplane at the Iowa State Fair, she was unimpressed: “It was a thing of rusty wire and wood and looked not at all interesting,” she recalled. It wasn’t until she attended an air show later in life that she knew flying was in her blood. A celebrity in America, Earhart tragically disappeared in the last leg of an around-the-world flight over the Pacific.

Edith Lederer (b. 1943)

Edith Lederer’s path to becoming a globetrotting journalist began with a months-long personal voyage through Europe shortly after college. Upon her return to the U.S. she got a stateside job with The Associated Press, but it wasn’t long before she was abroad again. In 1973 she became the AP’s first full-time female reporter covering the Vietnam War, and her career as a foreign correspondent progressed rapidly from there. She spent the next 25 years covering wars and changing global dynamics around the world, including China’s emerging capitalism in the late 70s, the conflicts in Northern Ireland and Bosnia, the breakup of the Soviet Union, the first Gulf War, the crash of Pan Am Flight 103, and the U.S. Embassy bombing in Nairobi in 1998. Since 1998 she has been the AP’s chief correspondent at the U.N.

Freya Hoffmeister (b. 1964)

Currently kayaking around South America – yes, all of South America – Freya Hoffmeister is an adventure traveler to be reckoned with. The German business owner was the first woman and second person ever to circumnavigate Australia in 2009, this after having sea kayaked around both Iceland and the south island of New Zealand on different occasions. Her current trip began on August 30, 2011, and will end just before her 50th birthday on May 10, 2014.

Samantha Brown (b. 1969)

As Anthony Bourdain captivates aspiring adventurers worldwide with his New York wit and Andrew Zimmern entertains by downing stomach-churning delicacies, there’s very little spotlight left on the Travel Channel for a female host. But what’s left goes to the perky-yet-wonderfully-watchable Samantha Brown, a blonde who every woman traveler can relate to. Brown’s warm personality and willingness to try all are an inspiration, particularly to women daring to travel solo or abroad.

Angelina Jolie (b. 1975)

Long before her leg became a well-traveled meme, Angelina Jolie was trekking the globe for personal, professional and humanitarian causes. Her A-list status as an actress made her an international celebrity, but Jolie’s service as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees since 2001 has truly earned her a place in this pantheon. In that capacity she has traveled the globe to raise awareness of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Along with her domestic partner, Hollywood titan Brad Pitt, Jolie has adopted three children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. She gave birth to her first biological child in Namibia; her second birth, to twins, took place in Nice, France.

Brittany Laughlin (b. 1985)

The way people travel and share their experiences is evolving at an overwhelming pace. Leading the speedy charge is gtrot, a social travel site that personalizes trip suggestions at a particular destination like hotels, restaurants – even deals – based on your social networks’ recommendations. At its helm is 26-year-old co-founder Brittany Laughlin, a tech-savvy entrepreneur who’s forcing (in a good way) globetrotters to re-think the way they travel.

To get in the spirit without paying an Olympic price, we’re encouraging supporters to participate without breaking the bank.

Though Londoners have been counting down to the 2012 Summer Olympics since they won the bid seven years ago (note: Paris may still be a bit bitter), the rest of the world is only now recognizing just how soon the world’s greatest competition will commence. With only a matter of months left until the July 27 Opening Ceremonies, many are realizing that tickets to the Games may be unrealistic – not to mention expensive. To get in the spirit without paying an Olympic price, we’re encouraging supporters – of whatever home country – to find some alternative ways to participate without breaking the bank.

Olympic Park ... a panoramic aerial view

Check out free events

The marathon course at this year’s Olympics will start and end at The Mall near Buckingham Palace, passing a number of London landmarks. Pick a spot along the way for either the men’s (Sunday, Aug. 5) or the women’s marathon (Sunday, Aug. 12) and watch as well-paced athletes earn Olympic glory for both themselves and their counties. It’s a great way to have a view of all the competitors in one spot – and for no cash (note: The Mall – start and finish – will be ticketed).

The Men’s 20km race walk (Aug. 4), Men’s 50km race walk and women’s 20km race walk (Aug. 11) (you’ll need tickets for some of The Mall’s viewing areas). Women’s triathlon (cycling) (Aug. 4) and Men’s triathlon (cycling) (Aug. 7) – parts of the route from Hyde Park, via Wellington Arch, Constitution Hill and Birdcage Walk (front of Buckingham Palace), are open to spectators.

Men’s cycling road race (July 28) and Women’s cycling road race (July 29) – spectators may watch parts of the route free of charge from The Mall, via west London and out to Surrey and back. The Men’s and Women’s individual road cycling time trials (Aug. 1) – start start and end at Hampton Court Palace in Richmond and are free.

Check out the London Visitor Charter

Buy from companies that are listed in the London Visitor Charter. The likes of Eurostar, the Tower of London, Tom Aikens’ restaurants and Indian eatery chain Masala Zone have all pledged “fair pricing and practice during the Games.”

Join the crowds at the London Live Sites

From the big three locations in London – Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and Victoria Park – to the 20-plus other locations across the United Kingdom, there will be big-screen viewings of medal ceremonies and competitions, free concerts and contests – all designed to include locals and visitors alike in the Olympic experience as it unfolds.

Riders race ... through London's streets

Skip London altogether

For less crowds and costs, try events taking place outside of London. Some venues, such as those for mountain biking, kayaking, rowing and canoeing are a mere 20-50km away. A tad farther away, Wales, Scotland and spots along British coastline and across the countryside will host Olympic events. Soccer tournaments (in Manchester, Coventry, Glasgow, Newcastle and Cardiff) and sailing events (in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbor) will make for a very different summer getaway destination than London.

Take a pre-Olympics tour of London

London has been prepping like crazy to host the world at the upcoming Games. The city will look its best in the months and weeks leading up to the Olympics and, with last year’s Royal Wedding and this year’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (early June) as feathers already in its cap, London has proven it’s ready to take the stage. With billions of pounds invested in updating and readying the city – from public transportation to landmark destinations to the creation of the Olympic Park – this is a chance to see the best of London and get an insider’s view of the final preparations for the main events and venues.

Competition ... in front of the Horse Guards Parade

Attend the Paralympics

Every four years, after the national network trucks and camera crews roll out of town, the much more intimate and often more inspiring Paralympians take over the village, competing in virtually all the same sports. As some of the world’s most impressive athletes, these competitors have put aside injury, illness and inequality to rise to the top of their sports. The crowds and prices for the Paralympics, running from August 29 – September 9, are less overwhelming, but the performances and achievements are arguably more so.

Follow the torch

Though the torch relay is sticking to the United Kingdom (as opposed to an international route), the destinations on the map are still worthy side trips. The tradition kicks off against a spectacular backdrop in Land’s End, England, on Saturday, May 19. By the beginning of June, the flame will burn through Belfast and Northern Ireland, then to Edinburgh and Scotland by mid month. On the 70th day – July 27 – the torch will reach the Olympic Stadium, and the Games will officially commence.

Visit a past Olympic host city

Visit one or more of your favorite Olympic host cities. From Athens and Tokyo to Montreal and Sydney, the summer Olympics have been held in every corner of the world. Any Olympics lover can find a moment in sports history to revisit. From Beijing, with its eye-catching Water Cube, home to Michael Phelps’ awe-inspiring eight gold medal run, to Berlin, where Jesse Owen dominated as a sprinter to win the begrudging respect of the crowd in the heart of Nazi Germany in 1936, there are countless layers of history at any Olympic site.

London 2012 ... the logo

Watch qualifying rounds

Pick a summer sport – any summer sport – and there will be one or more qualifying events for Olympic hopefuls. Teams are already trying to qualify for this summer’s Games. Female gymnasts, for instance, vaulted impressive showings at the 2011 World Championships in October, where the United States, Russia and China nabbed the top three spots of eight – and a guaranteed shot at the Olympic Gold. The next eight teams had to compete in the London Test Event in mid-January, where Italy, Canada, France and Brazil made the cut. Sometimes as exciting as the Olympics themselves, nail-biter prelims introduce nations to new athletes – and new gold medal hopefuls.

Surround yourself with adorable Olympic paraphernalia

London 2012’s creative team has obviously had a field day coming up with memorabilia and keepsakes that even those not attending the Games are bound to stock up on. The British flag’s red, white and blue colors are painted on toys big and small (the rubber duckies are our personal favorite!), and logos are plastered on sporting equipment and key rings alike. From lanyards to fine jewelry and stationery to soccer balls, the London 2012 logo is bound to appear in the hands of folks far beyond London.

Play virtual Olympics

The first official Olympic video game hit the shelves back in 1992 for the Barcelona Summer Olympic Games. Olympic Gold brought out the competitive edge in gamers around the globe, giving them a chance to compete virtually in archery, sprinting, swimming and pole vaulting. In the past decade, an official video game has been released with every Olympics, from Sydney 2000 to Beijing 2008. This year, check out Sega’s London 2012 or Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games – a controller in hand will put you right in the Games.

After a wonderful weekend trip, I can attest to the fact that Madison is much more than a college town.

A kegger isn’t hard to find in Madison – The University of Wisconsin-Madison recently nabbed the No. 3 slot in Playboy’s “Top Ten Party Schools.” But don’t let the 30,000 cardinal-clad undergrads deter you: This oh-so-charming city offers world-renowned bistros and, for avid dairy enthusiasts (like yours truly), palette-pleasing cheese tours. And, though you could easily spend 48 hours eating your way across this granola town, the outdoor views are definitely worth taking in. After a wonderful weekend trip, I can attest to the fact that Madison is much more than a college town.

After unloading our bags Friday night, my travel buddies and I were ready to size up Madison’s infamous eateries. Sardine, situated on Lake Monona’s waterfront, offered an impressive selection of fresh and inventive dishes. The modern warehouse setting set the stage for a warm goat cheese appetizer topped with fire roasted cherry tomatoes and olives, and a pan-seared pork paillard drizzled with an addictive horseradish-mustard sauce.

Sardine ... on lake Monona's waterfront

After dinner, we headed to Fresco – a rooftop restaurant and bar situated on the top floor of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art – to unwind and acquaint ourselves with the city’s layout. The chic bar’s weekend happy hour (8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday) is not to be missed: A late-night menu offers quirky cocktails and snacks – think huckleberry margaritas and spicy mac & cheese – for just $5.

And the service couldn’t be beat. Our cocktail waitress offered my companion the palm of her hand – instead of a napkin – for his chewed gum. Like my mom used to do. When I was 5.

But that’s how it goes in Madison. A seemingly out-of-line gesture can just be, well, nice.

Like John Priske.

I met him Saturday morning as I wandered passed stalls stocked with homemade pesto, honey, cheese curds, maple syrup and fresh produce at the Dane County Farmers’ Market, the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the U.S. Priske and wife, Dorothy, drive in every weekend from Fountain Prairie Inn & Farms, located 30 miles northeast of the city, to sell grass-fed beef and, for travelers sans coolers, not-to-be-missed beef jerky strips.

Pesto, honey, cheese curds ... oh my

The weekly market sets up shop on the perimeter of the State Capital Building, smack dab in the center of town. Young couples push strollers and undergrads fight off hangovers, standing in line for 30 minutes to pay $7 for Stella’s Hot & Spicy Cheese Bread. The locals know exactly which stalls – like Renaissance Farm’s spread of pestos, olive oils and dressing – to hit before the tourists arrive around 10 a.m., and zigzag accordingly.

From the farmers’ market, we made our way down State Street, a charming stretch of boutiques, used bookstores, restaurants and bars connecting the political district to University of Wisconsin’s main campus. The pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare is a stage for the city’s active arts scene – aspiring acoustic guitarists and jugglers slowed our stroll, setting a pace that matched Madison’s laid-back vibe.

State Street ... a charming stretch

The street’s used bookstores invite browsing. Shakespeare’s Books offers aisle after aisle of rare editions. As one friend paid for her 1921 and 1955 finds, the cashier sparked up conversation about the latter’s inscription: “Kathryn Cross 6/12/64 got in hospital when I went to get my tonsils out,” written in a child’s overly-practiced cursive.

Saturday evening, us “Coasties” splurged at L’Etoile, a gem-of-a-restaurant in the center of town – meat provided by Dorothy and John Priske – that serves seasonal menus “inspired by the small sustainable farms and artisan producers of the Midwest.” The intimate space allows for complete focus on the local food and drink at hand – and a fantastic view of the blue-hued capital building. To avoid justifiably pricey items, I recommend ordering from the prix fixe menu, featuring treats like Willow Creek Farm pork spare ribs, served with cucumber and arugula salad and corn bread.

After filling up, we walked to State Street staple Paul’s Club. More of a draw than its first-class beer selection and gregarious bartenders is the live tree that extends from a hole in the floor, unfurling over bar stools and conversation. I had the opportunity to talk beer with the locals (they recommended New Glarus and Ale Asylum) as undergrads trickled in and out.

If you stay at Paul’s long enough, Sunday morning might require a bagel and fair trade java pick-me-up. “Sconnies” pack into Gotham on East Mifflin Street to soak up last night’s mistakes with savory sandwiches like “The ‘G’” – hot capocollo, egg and cheddar on a New York-style bagel.

Before heading out – and to walk off our gathering food coma – we checked out Picnic Point, a mile-long peninsula that boasts barbecue pits and zen-inducing views of the skyline from across Lake Mendota. A perfect finish to the weekend, the nature walk from town to the peninsula gave us a chance to reflect on the charming streets, locally-grown eats, sights and sounds of this Midwestern town. There wasn’t a keg in sight.

Before the holiday festivities get underway, there are flights to catch, security lines to endure and delays to tolerate. We're here to help.

Silver bells, sleigh rides and mistletoe are on the not-so-distant horizon, giving travelers around the world loads to look forward to this holiday season. But, before the festivities get underway, there are flights to catch, security lines to endure and delays to tolerate. Making it to your destination in the last weeks of the calendar year and the first of next’s – whether home for the holidays or away for a winter escape – can be overwhelming. We here at Cheapflights know that (all too well) and are here to help with the Top 10 holiday travel tips, helping you navigate the commute this Yuletide season.

For procrastinators

Book last-minute Typically we encourage travelers to book flights between 60 and 90 days before an anticipated date of departure. That ideal time frame has now passed, leaving many fliers scrambling to find holiday fare deals. But all is not lost! Data shows that airlines this year were perhaps a bit too aggressive with pricing early on, leaving seats still to be filled. Lucky for procrastinators, flash sales are popping up left and right and – better yet – the best is possibly yet to come. Start scanning now, as early December bookers could save the most on holiday flights.

Travel alternatively As ongoing advocates of both alternative airports and alternative destinations, our stance holds true with the season of cheer upon us. For fliers with a set destination in mind, taking the time to compare nearby airports based on affordability could mean major savings. Boston residents, for instance, should consider TF Green International in Providence or Manchester-Boston Regional in New Hampshire if fares out of Logan are too steep. And the same is true for arrival cities. Folks eager to get away for a beach vacation should look for the deal rather than the destination. Instead of Miami this Christmas, how about a beach town on the Gulf like Fort Meyers or Sarasota? The bottom line: do your homework.

Fly on the holiday Flight searches by date often tell an interesting but consistent story: flying midweek, early in the day or late at night saves travelers cash. ‘Tis true on holidays, too. Many times the lowest fares go to travelers willing to fly on the holiday itself, whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Eve. Plus, the cheer can be felt 35,000 feet in the air for flexible fliers, as some airlines are particularly festive. Lufthansa in Christmases past has cooked traditional German meals and decked cabins with wreaths and decorations so passengers – and flight crews – can share in the celebration.

For gift givers

Shop online In an era of ever-increasing baggage fees, it’s best to show up to the airport with as little to check as possible. Lucky for those with long wish lists, nearly everything nowadays can be found – and shipped – thanks to the glorious Internet. Evidence? Our recent list of travel gift ideas, all of which are available courtesy of the web. Order a Big Wheel-luggage hybrid for the junior traveler in your life or an airline gift card for your favorite frequent flier. No matter the choice, it means less to get through security and less on your credit card.

Ship gifts If you’ve found a gift at a great rate or a specialty item during your holiday shopping sprees, then of course seize the deal. But if it doesn’t fit in your carry-on, you may want to ship it via UPS or FedEx Ground. Do the math a week before to see what will cost you less: a tracked package or an extra bag. If it’s the latter, remember to leave your gifts unwrapped so security can easily access the contents.

Pack an empty suitcase If the price is right, bringing an extra piece of luggage on your trip can be a frugal decision. Then, when it comes time to transport the gifts you’ve received home, you’ll have an empty suitcase to fill. Either pack a fold-up duffel in your luggage or bring a separate bag if it means you won’t get hit with high-priced baggage fees. First calculate what it will cost to ship your gifts home, then plan and pack accordingly.

Peruse duty-free International fliers over the holidays have the opportunity to savor their layovers a bit in the duty-free shops, where high-end products go for everyday prices in airports around the globe. Hubs like Hong Kong International Airport, Amsterdam Airport Schipol and London Heathrow Airport offer shoppers a bounty of stocking stuffers and goodies for under the tree. Shop on your way – or way home – tax-free. A friendly reminder: If you’re connecting Stateside from certain international locations, liquids purchased at duty-free have to be checked before the domestic leg of your flight.

For mile collectors

Save the miles Miles get tricky around the holidays, especially since “low points” seats for the most popular travel dates sell out even before the Halloween candy has hit the shelves. There’s that, plus some airlines implement the never-popular blackout dates. Accumulated miles, whether through an airline or a credit card, are used most economically either when travel plans are booked early or a traveler has flexibility with their itinerary. Our advice: Save the points during the holidays unless you snag a great deal.

Final thoughts

Invest in hand sanitizer The most wonderful time of the year is also the most sniffly time of the year for many travelers. Keep that in mind before you head for the airport, and pack plenty of hand sanitizer to help fend off germs. There’s nothing worse than realizing during ascent that you’re stuck in a cabin full of recycled air with a sickly seatmate. Fill your prescriptions, drink lots of water, wash your hands often – whatever it takes to guarantee your holidays will be spent both joy- and health-filled.

Expect delays Flight delays are pretty much a guarantee this time of year, whether its crowded airports, bad weather or mechanical problems causing them. There’s a way to plan ahead so that getting stuck behind infrequent fliers and families of five at airport security doesn’t cause anxiety. First, avoid connections if you can when booking, even if it means paying a little more. If a connection is a must, then ensure there’s a long enough layover in case your first flight is late to land. On the day of travel, get to the airport earlier – way earlier – than you typically would. Worst-case scenario: You spend extra time with your Kindle at the departure gate or relaxing at the airport bar (in which case, our beer lover’s airport guide will come in handy).

Cheapflights has compiled a list of our favorite travel products – perfect gifts to give travelers of every type – in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

As the holiday season kicks off and shoppers begin planning their Black Friday and Cyber Monday must-buy lists, the team here at Cheapflights has compiled a list of our favorite travel products – perfect gifts to give travelers of every type. From new gadgets for the unstuffed stocking to luggage that’ll keep the kids occupied at the departure gate, we’ve narrowed down the best travel accessories in the world to just 10. For the traveler in your life (and yes, you can treat yourself!), consider our Top 10 travel gift ideas for the holidays.

For everyone – Airline gift card

Gift cards are typically considered a hands-off kind of gift, ideal for acquaintances and folks in your life who are more difficult to shop for. But when that card gives the gift of flight, it’s a totally different tale. Buy an airline gift card for your friends, your family – even your boss. Most airlines like American offer plastic cards, shipped within a few days, or virtual gift cards, perfect if you’ve missed someone on your list. Gift cards, especially from discount airlines like Southwest where a round-trip ticket can cost as low as $80, are a guaranteed hit. An extra tip: Remember to pick an airline that flies out of your recipient’s local airport.

For the junior flier – Trunki

Flying during the holiday season pretty much guarantees long lines and overwhelmed families at the airport. A relief for parents has rolled into town, courtesy of Trunki, a baggage-scooter hybrid that has changed the way kids commute. The four-wheeled suitcase offers tots a chance to pack their own baggage, and then ride round both en route and at their destination. New this year from Trunki: SnooziHedz, a three-in-one blanket, pillow and travel buddy – simply perfect for the infamously low in-cabin temperatures.

For the reader – Amazon Kindle Fire

A frugal alternative to the iPad and a worthy consideration for the bookworm in your life, the Amazon Kindle Fire has finally been released! Its $199 selling price is 60 percent cheaper than the lowest priced iPad, and with thousands of apps and quick web browsing capabilities, we’ve deemed it a no-brainer, great travel companion. Eighteen million movie, TV, music, magazine and book options guarantee your tablet time – whether on a long-haul flight or a white sand beach – is well enjoyed.

For the aspiring bilingual – My French/Spanish Coach

UBI, makers of the oh-so-popular Just Dance games for Wii devices, has created a game for Nintendo DS that creatively combines fun and language learning for players of all ages. My French Coach – also available in Spanish, Chinese and Japanese versions – claims that dedicated linguists who practice just 15 to 20 minutes daily can become fluent in whatever language they’re learning, simply by playing mini-games and tracking their progress. Daunted by the idea of traveling to a non-English speaking country? Fear not!

For the photographer – Canon point-and-shoot

Though DSLR cameras are gaining popularity among travelers – including novice photographers – they also come with a hefty price tag. Luckily Canon is manufacturing user-friendly point-and-shoots that capture exquisite photos at a fraction of the price. Consider the new PowerShot ELPH for a fair $259.99 and watch as your loved one enjoys a 28mm wide-angle lens, 8x optical zoom and an optical image stabilizer – all within a super slim frame. The hardest part: choosing among the ultra-hip color options like hot pink and neon green.

For the environmentalist – Sustainable Cork Sleeve

As personal electronics become more and more sophisticated, so should their protective covers. Taking a laptop or tablet on vacation is risky business, particularly those whose price tags are high. Enter Ryan Frank, an eco-friendly furniture designer from South Africa, to the rescue. The sustainably minded craftsman has created Sustainable Cork Sleeves to protect e-readers, cameras, iPods – you name it – in naturally harvested, biodegradable cork leather. The result: wonderful carriers for your favorite nomad’s most expensive travel gadgets.

For the nature lover – Trek Light Hammock

Relaxation is the supreme goal for many vacationers, whether it’s after a morning of no-frills hiking or an afternoon of Daiquiri-laced sunbathing. Trek Light has pulled the right strings in developing its line of hammocks, 1b-portable loungers that expand to hold up to 400lbs. Made out of parachute nylon, the hammocks are mildew resistant and easy to set up – no knot tying required. The Double Hammock fits two adults comfortably, guaranteeing it a thoughtful present for a lover of the outdoors.

For the jet setter – Tumi Scale

Frequent fliers are all too familiar with rising baggage fees as airlines continue to struggle to offset rising fuel costs. And even worse than paying to check luggage: paying additional fees for overweight bags. Tumi’s new Scale is a handy solution, and a sophisticated gadget for your nearest and dearest jet setter this holiday season. The handheld device tells travelers in one grab – before heading to the airport – exactly what a bag weighs. Disclaimer: It utterly spoils the fun of repacking at the check-in counter or investing in a second suitcase at Duty-Free.

For the social traveler – iPhone 4s

Apple’s latest mobile device, the iPhone 4s, offers travelers much more than Angry Birds to pass the time in transit. The pocket-sized work of genius is supporting new travel apps, too, that keep on-the-go folks in the know and in touch. Bring your special someone good tidings by introducing them to social travel apps – like jetzet (formerly bumped.in) and gtrot – and welcoming them into the travel planning conversation. Want more downloadable ideas? Check out our guide to social apps that make group travel a breeze.

For the philanthropist – Heifer International sponsorship

As voluntourism rises in popularity, so does the urge among travelers to give back to a community, even after the suitcases are unpacked. Give the gift that gives back through organizations like Heifer International, which provides animals to poor communities around the globe to help them become self-reliant. Donate a $60 Flock of Hope in someone’s name and provide a family with chicks, ducklings and goslings that will feed that family and produce offspring that, under Heifer’s guidance, will be donated to another family in need.

Traveling with pets can be a nerve-racking adventure for first-time fliers – and even more so for their owners. But preparing ahead, from organized feeding schedules to vet visits, is a strategic way to guarantee you and your furry friend will be fine 35,000 feet in the air.

Many airlines have specific regulations regarding what types of animals can fly, so be sure to check with your carrier before booking. When it comes to cats and dogs – from kennel fee considerations to ID tags – Cheapflights has compiled a list of the Top 10 tips for flying with pets to help owners and, in turn, their four-legged companions fly stress-free.

Calculate the costs

The charges associated with carrying pets onboard – whether checked or in the cabin – add up quickly. Research airlines’ different rates ahead of time and factor the canine and feline fees into the total cost of airfare – both yours and your pet’s – before pressing book. Delta Air Lines for instance, attaches a hefty $200 fee per kennel to check a pet for one-way flights; cabin riders do less financial damage at $125 per kennel. And a good rule of thumb: like general airfare, discount airlines like Southwest ($75) and JetBlue ($100) often charge less for pets.

Call the airline

Start by checking your airline’s website for regulations, but also get a verbal confirmation that you and your pet are set to fly. Many airlines limit the total number of animals allowed within the cabin on each flight, so it’s important that a reservation be made sooner rather than later –and confirmed 24-48 hours before departure. American Airlines, for instance, caps the number of four-legged fliers at seven per flight: two in First Class and five in Business and Coach.

Rehearse nearby

First-time fliers are sometimes overwhelmed – justifiably – by a 35,000-foot ascent, so it’s important to schedule trial runs before the big day of flight. If you live in a city, take your pet for a ride on the subway or other modes of public transportation to familiarize it with both the movement and the crowds. Since the American Veterinary Medical Association frowns upon sedation – the combination of tranquilizers and high altitudes can prove fatal – it’s best to travel with calm, drug-free pets.

Visit the vet

Some airlines, like JetBlue and US Airways, don’t require vaccination or health and veterinarian documents for animals on domestic flights. It’s still recommended, though, that pet owners visit their vet before trips and carry up-to-date medical records and a first aid kit (gauze, tape, eye dropper, etc.) on flights. Many airlines, like United, require you to carry a health certificate issued less than 30 days before departure. To play it extremely safe, get acquainted with local veterinarians at your destination in case your cat or dog gets sick or injured while away.

Prepare the kennel

Squeezing your dog or cat into the claustrophobic kennel you purchased when they were just wee ones won’t do on a flight, whether short- or long-haul. Invest in a container that leaves your pet room to turn and stand up without hitting its head on the top of the carrier. Different airlines have different dimension requirements, though the USDA has laid out universal must-haves: food and water dishes, “Live Animal” stickers, upright arrows, bedding and other necessities. Remember to include objects that the animal is familiar with, whether it’s a favorite toy or blanket from home.

Attach ID tags

In case of separation, it’s important to mark your pet – as well as carrier – with proper ID tags. Attach to the kennel a note with your flight number, contact information and pet’s name. Do the same on your pet’s collar; remember that a reachable phone number is the most important detail. Many animals nowadays have microchips implanted that shelters can scan to identify the dog or cat within a national database. Tattooed IDs are also an option for pets, and handy when registered with the National Dog Registry.

Exercise the day before

Spoil your dog or cat the day before traveling with extra exercise, the goal being to wear them out. For dogs, that means longer walks and high-energy activities; for cats, a few extra games of Claw the Rope could do. Exhaust your travel companion so the next day’s flight is met with relaxation.

Pack food and water

Just like us, dogs and cats get dehydrated on flights. A handy tip: Freeze water before you leave home to ensure your furry friend has water in his dish by the time you both pass through security. United reminds passengers that, according to the USDA, pets must be offered food and water within four hours of checking in for a flight. On United flights, a signature is required to show when your pet was last offered nourishment.

Withhold food

A silly suggestion, considering the aforementioned tip. Of course you can pack food and snacks for your animal’s voyage, but it’s also important to avoid giving any edibles to your pet for a matter of hours before departure. Nerves are a guarantee, and not just for finicky felines. Queasiness, on the other hand, doesn’t need to be.

Prepare for the unexpected

Flexibility and patience are virtues that every traveler should possess. The same holds especially true when flying with pets. Whether your flight is delayed, your dog gets sick mid-flight, or your cat decides he can’t wait for the kitty litter – taking pets up in the air can be tough. Bottom line: Plan for the worst and expect the best. Bon voyage!

“Been there, done that – and could’ve done without.” It’s one of the worst feelings to have on vacation, particularly after waiting for hours in line at a top tourist attraction. Unimpressed by the Mona Lisa’s surprisingly small dimensions after dodging crowds for an entire morning at the Louvre? Uninspired by Sydney’s Darling Harbour, overrun by tourists and overpriced shops? Unmoved by a town along the Italian Riviera solely because of its inflated prices?

Having lived and vacationed around the world, our staff of travel experts is here to help, weighing in on must-sees and must-dos that will help you avoid long lines, high prices and masses of tourists.

Sydney, Australia

No one would dare rule out a visit to Sydney’s exquisite harbor and waterfronts for a spectacular view, but it’s the vantage point that makes all the difference. Having lived in Australia for years, Don recommends the Sydney Fish Market – located a little more than a mile west of the business district – over touristy Darling Harbour. Share a plate of oysters and a bottle of wine (Australian, of course), and admire the seaside marina’s sights and sounds. Want a lesson in shelling and grilling? Sign up for a class at the market’s premier Seafood School – Australia’s leading cooking school. If you’re down under for New Year’s Eve, Pete suggest heading to Balmain for a view of the bridge – and to ring in the New Year with locals, not tourists. (Tip: Get there early to nab a good spot!) Search and compare cheap flights to Australia.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

It’s especially difficult to know in a new city where to go for great nightlife. Kat, a former resident of Argentina, recommends skipping the tango shows in Buenos Aires’ San Telmo neighborhood. Though impressive, they’re full of tourists and fail to give visitors a real taste of Argentina’s capital. Instead, head to La Bomba de Tiempo for a night of fabulous live music. Let loose with locals as percussionists jam out for the first hour, and an invited guest joins in for the second half of nonstop music and dancing. Outdoors every Monday, rain or shine, it’s an absolute must. Search and compare cheap flights to Argentina.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

The chance to bathe, ride and play with elephants draws visitors north from tourist-packed hotspots in Thailand like Phuket and Bangkok year-round. But foreign tourists rarely see the negative impacts that these wait-in-line attractions have on the animals, and unknowingly support ill-intentioned groups. Lauren, an English teacher for a year in the Land of Smiles, recommends Elephant Nature Park, a rescue and rehabilitation center near Chiang Mai. The nonprofit is a wonderful alternative, and gives volunteers the chance to learn about and play with their elephants on day-, overnight- and week-long visits. Search and compare cheap flights to Thailand.

Washington, DC, United States

On a recent trip to America’s capital, Nadine discovered fabulous landmarks a bit more off-the-beaten path. For dinner, she skipped M Street and tried the newer, much trendier 14th and U streets near Logan Circle. From Asian fusion to Spanish tapas (her personal recommendations are Estadio and Masa 14), the area’s culinary gems are climbing the ranks of DC’s best restaurants. While there, also check out Logan Circle’s recently happening art scene. Less buttoned-up than Georgetown’s galleries, Logan Circle boutiques, like the Hamilton Gallery and Project 4, are more casual – and a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Search and compare cheap flights to Washington, DC.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is a startling impressive national art museum – and every visitor to Amsterdam knows it. The tourist-filled, all-kinds-of-art attraction can be overwhelming, so if modern art is your thing, consider a visit to the Cobra Museum instead, suggests Meagan D., who grew up in the Netherlands. Only Dutch, Danish and Belgian artists are featured at the wonderfully inventive space, and its curators do a fantastic job of blending local culture with contemporary art to create a powerful homage to the Cobra movement. The avant-garde collection and rotating exhibits make the trip to Amstelveen, a suburb of Amsterdam, absolutely worth it. Search and compare cheap flights to the Netherlands.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Our resident expert on Brazil, Josh, has been to Rio de Janeiro four times in the past two years alone. His advice: skip Ipanema and Copacabana, the hot spot’s bustling beaches. If what you want is seclusion and your own slice of South American paradise, take a two-hour bus ride to Buzios. Twenty-three beaches, fantastic boutiques, and quirky restaurants dot this fishing village – no surprise that it’s become the Riviera for Argentines and Brazilians alike. Grab a towel and a bus ticket and go; last time Josh visited, he had the beach all to himself. Search and compare cheap flights to Brazil.

Portofino, Italy

The Italian Riviera doesn’t have to be painfully pricey, insists Amy. On a recent trip to Portofino, she was startled by the exorbitant price tags on everything, from beers to boutiques. Instead of just handing over euros, she recommends catching a water taxi to neighboring Santa Margherita, a more down-to-earth alternative. Melt-in-your-mouth food and charming bed-and-breakfasts fill the coastal town – and at a fraction of the price of Portofino’s restaurants and accommodations. Even more important for some travelers, Santa Margherita attracts fewer tourists – providing you a more authentic Italian vacation. Search and compare cheap flights to Italy.

New Orleans, United States

A massive fan of both live music and New Orleans, Emily suggests that travelers looking for more music for their money skip JazzFest and instead take a trip to The Big Easy a couple of weeks earlier – for the French Quarter Festival. Often called the locals’ festival, the four-day celebration features up-and-coming and local musicians in venues strewn along the riverfront and throughout the Quarter. It lacks Jazzfest’s overshadowing headliners (this year’s line-up includes Bon Jovi, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffett) and high price of admission (up to $60 a day at the gate). It’s well worth the trip for an authentic – not mention free – event. Search and compare cheap flights to New Orleans.

Tel Aviv, Israel

While exploring Tel Aviv, check out an up-and-coming alternative to Jaffa: the culturally revitalized neighborhood of Neve Tzedek. After years of neglect, the historically rich area has recently made serious strides and now boasts amazing architecture, boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Dalia, a frequent flier to Tel Aviv, recommends Café Dallal – a charming bistro – for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Follow it up with a decadent dessert at the sweet little bakery next door. And another must-visit: the Tachana, a train station-turned-entertainment complex that, after 10 years of renovations, now attracts visitors with photography exhibits, arts and crafts fairs and live music shows. After an afternoon of strolling, grab a seat at one of the Tachana’s many great restaurants for a meal al fresco. Search and compare cheap flights to Israel.

Quebec City, Canada

Winter is a spectacular time to visit Quebec City. But before you make any snow-filled plans, Meghan K. recommends considering a visit during the annual Quebec Winter Carnival. Sleigh rides, snow sculptures and canoe races along the icy St. Lawrence River are on the agenda – and absolutely not to be missed. If you can’t make it during the man-made winter wonderland, take a toboggan ride in the center of Old Quebec at Les Glissades de la Terrasse Dufferin any day between December and March. Situated beside the stunning Chateau Frontenac, it’s a 60-mile-per-hour adventure smack dab in downtown Quebec. Search and compare cheap flights to Quebec City.

The jack-o’-lanterns are carved and on display, the kids have finally made up their minds, and skeleton costumes are flying off the shelves. It’s official: All Hallow’s Eve is upon us. Folks typically scout out the trendiest, nearby hayride or local haunted house, but true Halloween zealots take the fright fest a bit further. And for them, we’ve scouted out the most ghoulish attractions, from Singapore to Texas, to compile a list of the Top 10 haunted amusement parks worldwide. Warning: This list may not be suitable for kids.

Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios Singapore – Singapore

The scream-inducing spectacle that is Halloween Horror Nights – seasonally at Universal Studios in both Orlando and Hollywood for years – is opening this year in Singapore. Universal Studios Singapore is prepping the fake blood capsules now, because soon crazed clowns – our worst nightmare – and mutated zombies will take to the themed streets. The debut features six scare zones and borrows terrifying ideas from the vets over in the States; Universal Orlando has been scaring visitors for 20 years now. Dates: Oct 21-23 & 27-30

Scarefest, Alton Towers Resort – Staffordshire, England

The most visited theme park in the United Kingdom turns eerie for its annual Scarefest, a combination of devilish attractions and family activities that together make for a bloodcurdling – mind you, wonderfully so – holiday retreat. The Boiler House draws visitors underground to meet psychopathic serial killers while the Zombies! Scare Zone recreates a post-apocalyptic earth, sans humans. If the little ones are in tow, avoid the aforementioned attractions and Terror of the Towers, and instead head straight for Franklin’s Freaky Farm or Patch’s Trick-or-Treat Party, slightly less horrifying attractions. Dates: Oct 15-31

Screams Halloween Theme Park – Waxahachie, Texas, United States

Those utterly traumatizing clowns are back, this time just outside of Dallas-Fort Worth. Five major attractions draw Texans to Screams Halloween Theme Park on Friday and Saturday nights each October. Topping the list is the Castle of Darkness, a residential house of worry for nervous tour-goers. Next up (cue the big gulp) is Unkel Koy’s Klown Maze, where hounding clowns chase visitors through a winding haze of pure terror. Add the Arcane Asylum, Pirates of Peril Point and the Ghoulish Graveyard, and you’ve got yourself one frightening destination. Dates: Sept 30-Oct 30

Terenzi Horror Nights, Europa Park – Rust, Germany

Winner of the much coveted Screamie Award for Best International Attraction in 2010, Horror Nights at Germany’s popular Europa Park offers devilish treats and gory characters for visitors 16 and older. The cornfield labyrinth and five haunted houses are maddening mazes for visitors to lose themselves in. Top that off with the Night Coaster, Vampire’s Club and wonderful live performances, and it’s easy to see why Horror Nights wedged out its creepy competition. Dates: Sept 23-Nov 6

Howl-O-Scream, Busch Gardens – Williamsburg, Virginia, United States

Again with the clowns! Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens lures visitors into “the creepiest show on earth,” Grin and Scare It – a version of a circus gone extremely wrong. Perhaps we’ll stay away from that one, but we’re excited to check out the park’s other scare zones: Widow Makers, Stitchin’ Time, Scavengers and Unleashed, where werewolves apparently roam. As it does year-round, Busch Gardens features country-themed areas, and incorporates appropriate attractions: the Catacombs in France, Dead Line (based on the Pompeii Metro) in Italy and Bitten in Germany. Dates: Sept 23-Oct 30

Halloween Haunt, Canada’s Wonderland – Toronto, Canada

Canadians have it horribly good just outside of Toronto, where Halloween Haunt sets up shop for one month annually to fool and ghoul visitors. New this year is the Terror of London, where folks are transported back to Jack the Ripper’s murderous reign in not-so-merry England. Other showstoppers comprise Clowns at Midnight, The Asylum and Mother Noose (Get it? Like Mother Goose!) – all guaranteed to induce unnerving symptoms. Those who make it out of the mazes alive can follow them up with live shows like zombie-ridden Beyond the Grave and thrill rides, including the Bat and Time Warp. Dates: Sept 30-Oct 31

Halloween, PortAventura – Salou, Spain

A whopping 12,000 pumpkins are on display this year at PortAventura’s Halloween-themed spectacle – a seriously heavy commitment indeed. The world-renowned park pulls out all the haunted stops it can with eight live shows, including La Muerte Viva (Living Death) and Templo del Fuego (Temple of Fire), plus a nightly parade, featuring scary celebrities like members of the Addams Family and Beetlejuice. Fantastic rides, frightening festivities and the Mediterranean coast – what more could a thrill-seeker want? Dates: Sept 24-Nov 20

Knott’s “Scary” Farm’s Halloween Haunt, Knott’s Berry Farm – Buena Park, California, United States

Though it may not have the high-tech awesomeness that nearby Universal Studios Hollywood does, Knott’s Scary Farm carries its own via nostalgia thanks to 13 heart-racing, themed mazes and seven live shows. Like out of a horror movie, the park combines the worst of the worst – a Ghost Town (ghosts), Necropolis (vampires) and Carnevil (clowns) – over 160 acres of haunted terrain. Nearly 40 years young, the park taps into niche fears that’ll creep any visitor out. For starters: The Doll Factory. Dates: Sept 23-Oct 31

Halloween, Disneyland Paris – Paris, France

Walt Disney’s imaginative vision is executed unbelievably well at Disney Paris, Europe’s No.1 tourist attraction. And during its month-long Halloween festival, the park doesn’t let up. Bring the kids to Mickey’s Halloween Treat in the Street, and then shake hands with Jafar at Meet and Greet with Disney Villains. For the less faint of heart – older than 12 years old, that is – be sure to catch Terrorific Night for two nights only. After the sun sets, the entire park transforms into your worst nightmare – roaming monsters and all. Dates: Oct 1-31

Hersheypark in the Dark, Hersheypark, Hershey, Pennsylvania, United States

The sweetest place on earth gets downright spooky every October, when Hersheypark drapes itself in fall colors and scary trick-or-treat-themed witchery. More than 50 rides open under new guises: the Balloon Flight becomes the Balloon “Fright” and the SooperDooperLooper roller coaster becomes the SooperBOOperLooper, scaring visitors beyond the norm. Be sure to include the kids in this land of make-believe, where a Trick-or-Treat Adventure is offered for children 12 and younger – a perfect way to start their Halloween candy collection. Dates: Oct 14-30
