Accessing the Colorado River

The part of the Colorado River that flows through Arizona begins on the border of Utah at Lake Powell, and ends just before Lake Mead on the Nevada border and drifts through many dams and canyons, including the Grand Canyon. But simply walking down to river’s edge and jumping into a raft is not as simple as it sounds. Because there are very few points along the river that are accessible by car, most trips are multi-day events, beginning up north and ending in the south, and many include a hike or helicopter ride.

Kayaking or rafting?

Rafting is a great way to conquer a lot of distance and requires little work on behalf of the adventure traveler. Trips range from one to 18 days and most tours take care of the food and camping equipment. Visitors may opt for either motorized rafts or non-motorized rafts, both of which are driven by guides, allowing the traveler to enjoy the breathtaking views.

If you’re someone who feels that physical labor enhances one’s overall experience and sense of accomplishment, then kayaking might be a better option.

If you are a seasoned professional and are interested in kayaking on your own, the National Park Service has set up a lottery system for self-guided trips, and those who haven’t kayaked it in the last five years receive priority. At least one person in your group must have experience white-water kayaking the Colorado River. If you want to kayak the entire stretch of the Grand Canyon with a professional guide (the route is known as Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek), most tour groups require Class 4 paddling skills, but there is usually a support boat that follows, just in case.

If you don’t have the time but still want to get in a bit of kayaking adventure in, your best bet is to head to Lake Mead or Lake Powell.  Both are unique and offer plenty of options for both rafting and kayaking for people of all skill levels.

Lake Mead is closer to Las Vegas, which is where the nearest major airport is located. It’s formed by the impressive Hoover Dam and gets a bit more traffic than Lake Powell.

Lake Powell is home to the natural formation known as Rainbow Bridge, ancient Native American rock illustrations, and a wider array of sandstone, giving it a softer look and lighter color than the cliffs of Lake Mead. Lake Powell is formed by the slightly smaller Glen Canyon Dam.

Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, United States | March 3

Arlington National Cemetery – Arlington, VA

USS Arizona – Honolulu, Hawaii

Under the shallow waters of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu lies the USS Arizona battleship, sunk during the historical raid that sparked the United States’ entry into war with Japan in 1941. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall – Washington, DC

When 21-year-old, Chinese-American student Maya Lin won a public competition for the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, it caused quite a controversy. The wall is so polished that is reflects anyone looking into it, symbolic in bringing together deceased soldiers and visitors; the past and the present. Liberty Memorial – Kansas City, MO

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally dedicated to sustaining world peace after what had been one of history’s most devastating wars: World War I. The most prominent exhibit at the museum is known as the Western Front Poppy Field, which houses 9,000 poppy flowers representing the 9 million combatant deaths. National Veterans Art Museum – Chicago, IL

Originally created to showcase art from Vietnam soldiers, the museum has expanded and now includes work from all veterans, including the Gulf War, War on Terror and other conflicts. Navajo Nation Veterans Memorial Park – Window Rock, AZ

During World War II, the Navajo Code Talkers were considered one of the United States greatest assets, providing the military with a code that was never broken by any of its enemies. Navajo soldiers have been serving for the United States ever since, including in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 1995 a group of Navajo Vietnam veterans, Code Talkers and shamans built the Navajo Nation Veterans Memorial Park to honor the efforts of Navajo soldiers. African American Civil War Memorial & Museum – Washington, DC

Though it was 150 years ago, the conclusion of the American Civil War still represents a significant change in the political and social foundation of the United States, and the African American Civil War Memorial pays tribute to the African American troops who helped create that change. The memorial, known as The Spirit of Freedom, is a nine-foot bronze wall across the street from the African American Civil War Museum. The convex side of the sculpture depicts the fighting African American troops while the concave side illustrates the enslaved families. At the museum, visitors can view records and photographs of the troops who served in the Civil War to help them better understand what life was like for those brave soldiers. Veterans Day Parade – New York, NY

Veterans Day parades are a great way for towns and cities to honor its servicemen and women, and, if you find yourself in the New York City area, become a part of the largest Veterans Day event in the country. Every year, from 11am to 2pm, more than 20,000 participants march from 23rd to 59th streets up Fifth Avenue in celebration and remembrance. Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Sept 11, the parade will also commemorate the heroic efforts and lives lost during the tragic attack. Veterans travel from across the country to partake in the parade festivities, and at this year’s celebration both the newest and oldest Medal of Honor recipients will be in attendance. Hokkaido, Japan

A large island in the northernmost region of Japan, Hokkaido is a great place to witness the change of seasons known by the Japanese as momiji.  During the foliage season, soft yellows of beech trees, bright reds from birch trees and occasional deep purples of okagami Japanese maples are the stars of the show. Coconino National Forest, Arizona, United States

Lavaux, Switzerland

Mount Kilimanjaro – Tanzania

At 19,336 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa, and has become an increasingly popular hiking destination for travelers. Zion Narrows – Zion National Park, Utah, United States

Paine Circuit Trek – Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia, Chile

Patagonia has always been a destination sought after by adventure travelers and the like because of its dramatic and challenging terrain, breathtaking views and abundance of wildlife. Running 47 miles long, this path was originally created to help shipwreck survivors find their way to safety. Tiger Leaping Gorge – Yunnan, China

Set along China’s longest and most revered river, the Yangtze, the hike along Tiger Leaping Gorge is a pleasant break from the city culture that lies just 40 miles away. Flanked by the majestic, snowcapped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, this 15-mile trail, known as the High Road, follows the surging Yangtze and typically takes two days to complete. Sziget Fesztivál- Budapest, Hungary

Bestival-Isle of Wight, England

Nope, it’s not Glastonbury and it’s not Reading- it’s Bestival. Probably one of the most eclectic festivals out there, Bestival offers an alternative and diverse option to the typical corporate music fest. This kid-friendly, four-day event (September 8 to 11) boasts music from renowned rock artists, as well as quirky tents and competitions. The most popular event is Fancy Dress, where attendees dress up in outlandish costumes. In 2010, 55,000 festival goers participated in Fancy Dress, and ended up breaking a Guinness World Record.

Rock im Park/ Rock am Ring-Nuremberg, Germany and Nürburg, Germany

This three-day rock festival, from July 3 to 5, is the largest music festival in Germany and divides itself between two cities; Nuremberg and Nürburg.
