Cheapflights weekly round-up

This week has been a surreal one.

Luxury travel on the cheap has really made a play – jetting people off to preppy Nantucket for less than $10, and allowing perfectly non-first-class regulars to participate in the elegant front of the cabin quarters. It’s like pigs flying. I can suddenly afford to hop on a first class flight and stay at the Fairmont, or get free medical insurance in Mexico.

Check out these unreal savings (and eye-catching news stories) in case you missed them:

Flights
JetBlue $9 Flights to Nantucket: (Yes, that’s the cheapest thing you’ll find on the island.) Sure, New England has some schizophrenic weather patterns, but that shouldn’t stop you from booking a flight to Nantucket. JetBlue caught on to this hot little island’s allure and set prices to $9 per flight as a part of its “Cheeps.”

You Stay Classy, United: This week, United let the rest of us in on the luxuries of first class. Awesome rates (like $209 for a New York flight to Washington, DC) give us just enough room to rub elbows with our VIP friends up front. Our tip? Act like you were born to sit there.

Hotels
Oh, Thanks Economy: Now you can afford to stay at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts even if you’re pinching pennies. Their summer resort sale on Monday was giving away all kinds of free nights and deals, so we hope you got a chance to book.

Palm Trees and Steel Drums: Cheap Caribbean blew our minds this week with its 49-hour sale on all-inclusive packages to Aruba, Jamaica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. This decadent package started at $49/ night at participating resorts, and it ends tonight, so think fast and book by midnight.

News
Yes, It’s Just a Flu: But Mexico knows you’re still scared anyway. That’s why it’s dropped its prices and started offering free medical insurance to tourists who can prove they’re staying in a Mexico City hotel. So breathe easy and take advantage of these unbelievable prices.

Carry That Weight: This week there was a collective sigh for American Airlines, when it raised its checked-baggage fees on domestic flights by $5. Luggage is a drag (pun intended) in the first place – paying for it is even worse.

Just Can’t Stand It: No kids, we’re not talking about the opera. This week, Ryanair’s passengers responded to a poll, saying sure, they would stand on a flight – as long as the flight was free.
