Colorado Compost – Denver International Goes Greener

February 27, 2009

Those soggy leftovers from lunch at Denver International Airport (DEN) may be making Colorado grow greener. Employees at the airport’s Jeppesen Terminal and airport office building are taking part in a pilot program aimed at determining the feasibility of composting organic materials.

Denver International’s composting program began in late January and is set to run for three months.

The airport's green initiatives are just one of many composting plans that are taking place in the Mile High City. The Denver Department of Public Works has run a residential-collection composting program for months now.

In a prepared statement, Janell Barrilleaux, DEN’s director of environmental services, says the airport's effort entails gathering organic material from places such as restaurants and break rooms. The idea is to render it into reusable compost material.

Barrilleaux says the test, “will help us determine the feasibility of making organics collection and composting a permanent program [at Denver International].”
