Final Decision: JAL stays with American Airlines
To culminate a very long decision making process, Tokyo-based Japan Airlines has decided not to partner with Delta, and to remain in the Oneworld Alliance with American Airlines.
The tug-of-war between Delta and American hit its peak when Delta offered to give JAL $1 billion to switch alliances, and American Airlines offered $1.4 billion (with a promise of $2 billion over the span of three years) to stay in their current partnership, according to USA Today.
Ultimately, JAL said in a statement that switching alliances is not worth the risk, and that they look forward to expanding their routes with Oneworld. Both American Airlines and Japan Airlines will ask their respective governments to grant them antitrust immunity on trans-Pacific routes.
