For the first time since the major six-day shutdown, Iceland has had to close its major airports due to the volcanic ash. Although the eruption originated in Iceland, strong winds had kept the cloud from lingering over the country’s airspace. Now, winds have changed, and ash clouds have might flying dangerous.

Both Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavík International Airport have been closed as of today, but two other Icelandic airports – in Akureyri and Egilsstadir will remain open, since the cloud isn’t expected to reach that far. 

Iceland Air has made arrangements for passengers either to and from Europe that were planning to stop in Keflavik – they will now stop in Glasgow, Scotland.
