New Departures Terminal Opens at Key West Airport
Departing passengers on Key West flights will now enter a new, more modern, terminal designed to guide passengers more efficiently to their gates.
The 30,000 square-foot facility at Key West airport (EYW) is designed to serve departing passengers. For those passengers on arriving Key West flights, construction will begin soon on renovating the existing 1957-era terminal. That facility will cater largely to arrivals, and is expected to be finished in early June.
The entire terminal complex will remain fully operational throughout the work.
How’s the new departure terminal flying with travelers? In a prepared statement, regular Key West visitor Stanley Kovac of Wilton, Connecticut says, “Using this airport is so much more comfortable…a lot more spacious than the old terminal.”
The new Key West terminal is actually elevated over parking facilities. It offers second-level ticketing, baggage and security areas for departing passengers, restrooms, and concessions – including a restaurant with panoramic window affording a sublime view of one of the most romantic airfields in the country.
The Key West airfield is populated exclusively by regional jets and propjets. Key West travelers can fly non-stop from Delta Air Lines’ hub at Atlanta (ATL), American Airlines’ hub at Miami (MIA), and US Airways’ hub in Charlotte (CLT). There’s also non-stop service from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and Tampa (TPA).
