Philadelphia mayoral candidate plans airport boost
Philadelphia International Airport is at the center of a mayoral election campaign, and could soon be linked with more global destinations.
Democratic candidate Michael Nutter has prioritized the construction of more gates at the largest hub in the Delaware Valley, as well as other improved facilities, according to reports.
Recognizing the importance of the airport to the local economy, Nutter is making aviation improvements in south-east Pennsylvania a central focus of his mayoral bid. Republican opponent Al Taubenberger, however, has a similar vision.
Both nominees would support more US Airways flights to popular international destinations. The airport is already the primary hub for the Arizona-based carrier.
Nutter told The Philadelphia Inquirer: “The airport is critical, not only to the future of the city but to its impact on the region.
“I think it’s pretty obvious there have been a number of challenging situations in airport operations. I’m fully examining all the performance issues out at the airport.”
Working with local businesses to reduce flight noise would also be a priority, he confirmed.
Taubenberger acknowledged that Southwest Airlines is serving a vital role as a commuter and leisure airline at Philadelphia, but called for greater support for more international US Airways links.
