TSA: Could smart phones help cut airport lines?
Soon, your smart phone or PDA could help minimize your wait time at the airport. The Transportation Security Administration is working towards a program that links cell phones to detectors so that it can measure how long it takes to go through security checkpoints.
Once the TSA obtains the information for how long each passenger is waiting at airports across the country, it would broadcast the wait-times on its web site so travelers can see and plan accordingly.
The devices that would be installed detect personal electronic equipment by way of serial numbers, and possibly prevent check-in mishaps and delays. Some civil liberty experts worry that letting the governments track people’s location could be an invasion of privacy, but the TSA reports that each person has the ability to turn off its status if they don’t want tracking. In addition, serial numbers are only partially recorded until the security checkpoint has been cleared, then the number is promptly deleted from the TSA’s files.
The project was tested last year the Indianapolis airport, but officials are still in the early stages of researching the technology. Some European airports are interested, including London’s international hubs.
Having such extensive and updated wait information could possibly remove some uncertainty and doubt in traveling, reports USA Today.
